From July 9 to July 16. I worked super high intense, but also achieved the goal I was not sure whether I can make it. Finally I made it, which showed my potential. This taught me a lesson. If I work hard enough, I can achieve what i don’t even dare to dream. So why not?

Mark this big day

The past one week was so busy and wonderful. Maybe less than five hours sleep per day in naps. All I did is work, nap and repeat. Do not think about anything else and lived so pure. Maybe I worried about not having enough time to make it, but worrisome is meaningless, all I left was to work and work to as good as I can.

Before the meeting I was nervous and at the same time, I was so focused on giving the good presentation with all my energy. Time flied during my talk, all I did was to immerse myself into the materials I prepared and to go over my work over the past years like I was living once again. That 1.5 hours were wonderful, I became more and more excited during the talk, I forgot myself and forgot nervous. It was just addictive.

Today, I made it. A dream came true.

money vs time

There are two types of relationships between money and time. To differentiate the two, the key is you.

One, you pay your time as currency for stipend. The value per hour is constant. It’s like you pay your time to buy money. You basically have no role in it.

Second, you spend some money for time, then with the time you buy, you are making more money. Here, you are a converter. The value of hour at your hand is no longer constant, you can make it miracle.

Braver and stronger

To start something new, to get out of the comfort zone and to be initiative is hard. Good things are always hard to get, especially hard at the very beginning before the momentum is established . Climbing the mountain is harder than getting off it.

But to get something good in mind, you need to do it. Every initiation was hard at the beginning but you feel easier after you get use to it. Then launch another initiation and repeat.

You have reached higher and higher. You are becoming stronger and stronger.

More importantly, when challenging yourself with new initiations has established its own momentum and become a habit, you are braver and braver.

Braveness is hard to train, but in this way you can get it.

Fly with time

Time flies without your notice when you fully commit and focus yourself onto something. You also immerse and forget yourself in it but you gain the purest experiences: peaceful, sweet, excited, happy or sorrow.

I need to train myself to master the trigger into the mode since this mode not only gives me peace and joy but super high efficiency. Time flies, but this super high efficiency makes you achieve more as if your life is prolonged.

Two lessons

Lesson 1:

Pushing forward. Push your project forward as early as you can, especially for those appear to be far away but are truly important. They normally require long term constant add up everyday. These work appear not urgent and easy to procrastinate however hard to expedite just before due time.

Lesson 2:

For new projects never touched before, especially large projects or the ones mentioned in lesson 1. No matter how easy or hard is it in your estimation, punch through this whole process first to secure a raw result. This will give you a first version of accomplishment and provide a more accurate estimation of the whole project, based on which you can then start to refine polish and modify. In this way you can have realistic handle over the progress and assign your time more wisely.

Make two lists

I realize my memory is bad so I need two lists to remind myself of things that are truly important to me.

It not all memory’s fault, more often, it’s simply because I am distracted by urgent trivial so as to move really important things into subconscious storage.

One list for workspace, one for family and life.

Secret of real science

Many years of scientific training so far have reached two stages to summarize the secret of doing real science. Maybe more decades of doing science will give me more thoughts, but so far two.

First stage not surprisingly, is to see more details or information while others can not. This stage seems to be consistent with the public expectation on scientists, at least consistent with mine when I was not in this field. To see more, years of learning and using scientific theories can basically give you this ability, which is common in any other fields.

The second stage, surprisingly, is a challenge and reflects the core of scientific spirits. This challenge of doing real science is to answer questions with the simplest answer but not a more complicated answer. Counterintuitively, it is much easier for scientists to come up with complicated answers than simple answers. It is much easier to speculate a more complicated and broader picture than to raise testable hypotheses.

We all have imaginations, thus the scientific training is to train young scientists to control their imagination before they gained the skills to raise testable hypotheses to answer realistic small questions in the simplest way.

Basic laws of society

No matter how advanced our human society develops, there are always things hard to access or possess for the majority. The rarer the items, the higher the price. To get these valuable stuff, “hardworking pays off” is the golden rule.

Some basic needs such as food, energy, housing may become free someday in the future. We may even evolve to live longer lives to 200 years old. But still, without time traveling, hard working is the golden rule to get precious things, such as respect, self esteem, love, friendship, some unknown materials or products , dreams and so on.

That’s why I am always optimistic about future since I know what to hold on.

Speak up

Nice people tend to think nice, behave nice and plan nice. But there is also a tendency that they seldom speak up.

As we are not living alone on this planet, communication with others is inevitable. This is not only something we have to do, but also something helpful that we should do. More importantly, what we can do as an individual independently is quite limited. By working with others, we can achieve a lot more and bigger.

Another rationale that we need to speak up is that fact that you are what you do but not what you think or plan. So for people to know you and your idea, you need to speak up to people and then of course work for it. Don’t simply think and plan in your mind since no body is able to read your mind. This is really important. Words have power.
